I have a similar model cord (not a Vantec) that is connecting my hard drive from an HP Pavilion 533w to my Dell laptop, both run XP. The hard drive however, isn't showing up at all, like the laptop doesn't realize anything is connected to one of its USB ports. Any suggestions?

If it was JUST the hard drive you would be able to power on the unit and see BIOS messages or a company logo or something with a final text message warning that "no boot device detected" or similar. So chances are the HD is OK.

Not sure what's dead. As I was using it the screen went black. Thought it was just the monitor. Connected another monitor, no luck. Any way for me to tell how dead it is? Thanks for any help you can give. Wow, that commercial where the couple is getting married and everyone keeps saying, "You are about to lose everything" (computer data) is really ringing true about now!

Should work like a charm; it's what I would use. Provided it's the LAPTOP that is dead and not the hard drive that stopped functioning.

Not true. The Vantec adapter will fit older IDE in both 2.5" and 3.5", and fit all current SATA hard drives. The only hard drives they do not fit are SCSI (server) hard drives.

I don't know if you bought the Vantec one or not, some competing adapters are cheaper but have high failure rates. If Vantec, try the trouble shooting options on their website and contact them if it doesn't work. If you have another PC to try it on, that would be a good idea also
