Each type of stem cell (there are 5 main types) have differing uses. ES cells (embryonic cells) are actually being replaced by iPS cells... which is where ES cells are given an genetic instruction to produce extra cells for research. It hasn't quelled the religious nuts, who have no clue why they object at this point.
