The host obviously can't connect the dots with America's global role in the world, it's military spend/power, and how peaceful the world has been over the last 20 years in terms of great power conflict. Without America's vast military power overshadowing all other powers, great power rivalry and conflict would be a lot more likely and we would see yet more world wars between great powers.

[2010-10-30 14:27:27] rihoko6 - It's an industry ...

It's an industry that's grown too big to stop growing, and will always keep lobbying to make itself relevant - with whatever means. On the + side, with so much of the US economy structured around it and outsourcing is mostly domestic, the bulk of govt military expenditure probably has a relatively good multiplier effect to gdp. Under the global financial crisis and keynesian economics, increase govt spending > stimulus & up tax. Since US is far far in the lead, it's not really an arms race.

One, is the leader of an aggressive and militaristic country with ambitions that threaten world security. I couldn't tell if they mean't Kim or Obama.

[2010-10-30 09:03:56] afterapplepicking - While I agree with ...

While I agree with the overall message of the piece and I understand the humor shown in the initial metaphor between the U.S. and North Korea, I object to that metaphor. It trods upon the memory of every North Korean who crossed into China looking for food only to be sent back to North Korea as an illegal immigrant, where they were then promptly executed. Al Jazeera has done fair-minded pieces on North Korea before. I mean, really? Kind of a pedestrian and unnecessary zinger at the U.S., no?
