Without America's vast military power overshadowing all other powers, great power rivalry and conflict would be a lot more likely and we would see yet more world wars between great powers.

On the + side, with so much of the US economy structured around it and outsourcing is mostly domestic, the bulk of govt military expenditure probably has a relatively good multiplier effect to gdp. Under the global financial crisis and keynesian economics, increase govt spending > stimulus & up tax. Since US is far far in the lead, it's not really an arms race.

It trods upon the memory of every North Korean who crossed into China looking for food only to be sent back to North Korea as an illegal immigrant, where they were then promptly executed. Al Jazeera has done fair-minded pieces on North Korea before. I mean, really? Kind of a pedestrian and unnecessary zinger at the U.S., no?
