Also, these technologies are good but you need to have the money to spend in the first place to invest it. most people dont, this is being tackled with so called 'pay as you save' loans but this has not been rolled out to date.

Insulation is the best spend of money on a house and the money spent on the ground source heat pump would be better spend on increaseing the insulation leveles of the building. Using a rigid insulation material, such as celetex, on all the walls and the floor would dramaticaly reduce the heating demand.
