That is a very good question and to be honest i am not really sure. As far as I know that power cord is to add voltage to external drives that do not have their own power source. But if your drive is powered by USB I would think it would need it to work at all so the fact that it is working is kind of surprising. But it very well could be working at lower voltage then it needs to run at full speed. Sorry I don't have a better answer but their website does not even mention it.
[2011-11-11 21:04:43] parrotcar - I got a USB 3 card ...I got a USB 3 card like this off amazon, its the tecknet £8.99 pounds. I think this is the same as many other cards. It doesnt come with a molex power cable, as apparently it isnt required according to one reviewer. So anyway I installed it and use it with my 2.5 1TB portable (usb powered) drive and so far ive had 45MB/s. Can it go faster if I powered it using a molex cable from my psu?
[2011-06-18 22:36:10] FUzzyBUnnyBOoties - Thank you :-). You ...Thank you :-). You are right they will not all achieve USB 3.0 speed. They actually say that they can reach up to USB 3.0 speed. But that can depend on the type of drive it is connected to and the fact that the PCI port is going to be slower then a onboard 3.0 controller. So to be honest I would think the throughput would be more like half way between 2.0 and 3.0 with some burst getting closer to 3.0 speed. Still a vast improvement over a 2.0 port if this is your only option.
[2011-06-18 05:37:53] optic212 - How is the ACTUAL ...How is the ACTUAL TRANSFER SPEED ? Could you test it for us ? I read everywhere that they do not run at usb 3.0 speeds, but are in fact much slower, could you verify this for me ? Well presented video. Thanks.
[2011-03-15 14:16:33] FUzzyBUnnyBOoties - Yes it is a power ...Yes it is a power connector to power the usb devices. It uses a floppy drive type power connector. I beleive it draws 5 volts just like the usb 2.0 does.
