Firefighters in Chicago used to use a similar glass "grenade" in the late 1800's, filled with chemicals that when released in a similar fashion under the conditions of a fire would remove pretty much all of the oxygen from the air and suffocate the flames. What occurs is, 2 chemicals mix when the container shatters and develops a new chemical that "sucks" the oxygen out of the room. If you've ever walked into an un-ventilated room where a car battery is being charged (and the caps are off the top of the battery) and get close enough to it, you will experience having the breathe sucked right out of your lungs!
