Because Firewire is a Apple created standard and holds more red tape and fees than standard usb 2 or 3 implementation.

I see where you are coming from, as many of the new devices support firewire. However, If firewire is so fast and reliable than why haven't we been using that instead of USB ?

[2012-05-20 12:13:41] TheMatteoDV - Believe me ...

Believe me firewire is not dead, nor unreliable. Most (pretty much every) prosumer and professional grade video camera still uses firewire 800 (the smaller connector) as the recommended connection. Because it is so fast, ~800MBps guaranteed.

Oh yeah, and when rendering to an internal drive or USB2.0 I've never had any problems.

[2012-05-03 08:56:58] ztveng - I'm doing video ...

I'm doing video editing on a Sabertooth X58 machine. We do have some firewire drives, but hardly ever use them. What we do use 1394 for is connecting to a HDV taperecorder occasionally, that works great and can't be accomplised with any other interface. For external storage we have some Lacie USB 3.0 disks, and while I'm liking the speed, they're consistently introducing errors on video files when rendering directly to them from After Effects (CS5). In any other case they're working perfectly.

Excellent review. However, the speed comparison between eSATA and USB 3 isn't quite valid. The reason is that the external enclosures use SATA II (3 gb/sec) internally, which is the bottleneck.
