Because if they didn't a lot of us would be dead right now, and so many cubic miles of land would be so heavily irradiated that it would be impossible for 99% of life to live their. Chernobyl is still abandoned today because of the radiation, even though they contained it and prevented it from becoming a lot worse the entire city around the nuclear plant is a ghost town. They sacrificed themselves to stop it from becoming a lot worse, and to save many more lives.
