In England we could not eat some types of food because of radiation (English bred lamb, etc). If it was left unchecked then it would have been ten times worse. Europe found out what happened at Chernobyl because a nuclear reactor in Sweden picked up dangerously high radiation readings. So please dont belittle the sacrifice these guys made.

Also it was decided that if they were to get sick. It would be "ok" as they are old enough that their life spans won't be horribly cut short. The only people allowed to enter the higher radiation areas are in their late 50's to early 60's.

Some lasted longer, and some died within hours and possibly on the scene of chernobyl. None of them knew this. They had an idea of the possible dangers but none knew they were guinea pigs. Such a shame. It took 36 hours to evacuate Pripyat. Absolute ignorance on behalf of the russian govt.
