You turn on the magnet that's directly in front of the slug and then turn it off just before the slug reaches it. Then you turn on the next one and turn it off just before it reaches it and so on and so forth. The energy behind the slug will depend on slug mass, magnet strength, number of magnets, resistance along barrel, etc.

But what i love about coil/Gauss rifles is that they are as of yet restricted by the ATF. Get one going in a 22" barrel of .30cal at 2700fps you have one hell of a rifle.
