Embryonic stem cells are most commonly taken from the left over fertilised embryos of fertility treatment its a common misconception that they all come from abortions in fact the majority of embryonic stem cells come from an embryo that has already gestated and become a child

From July 18th to 20th 2012 the 4th International Conference on Stem Cell and Tissue Formation will take place in Dresden, Germany. This time the overall topic of the meeting is "Quantitative stem cell biology -- From models to applications". To foster a truly interdisciplinary, open-minded exchange of ideas, the conference starts with a 1.5 day symposium on dynamics of stem cell heterogeneity and stem cell fate decisions (with topics ranging from basic to systems biology).

Totipotent stem cells are only present in the first few cell divisions from a person but you can culture them and divide them in a lab, This isn'ta great reply as I'm not an expert, but by the sound of it, it doesn't work how you think it does, I'd ask on yahoo or read on an unbiased site that doesn't do stem cell research, hope that sort of helps.. :P

You should be able to get a sufficient amount of embryonic stem cells by aborting just one person, right? I mean a person is made up of billions of cells...Or am I just being an idiot right now?

I support the blood stem cell, not the embryonic stem cell. I just don't agree with abortion. I'd only support it if the baby died of stress, but not from abortion and killing it.

Thank you for the simple explanation. I met a woman on a plane headed for Cabo to get treatment. Stem cell therapy prolonged her life when she was diagnosed stage 4 3 years ago. She's going back for more. When will this be legal in the US? Why are we delaying while other countries are aggressively pursuing this option?

Yes they can, but their use in therapy is still experimental. Clinical trials to test stem cells in the treatment of sight problems is underway and these will tell us if use of stem cells is safe and effective for the patient.

After 6 months of offering stem cell therapy in combination with the venous angioplasty liberation procedure, patients of CCSVI Clinic have reported excellent health outcomes. Ms. Kasma Gianopoulos of Athens Greece, who was diagnosed with the Relapsing/Remitting form of MS in 1997 called the combination of treatments a "cure".
