Your NIC won't work if you specify a MAC in the OS which differs from the hard coded MAC (so changing the MAC is not possible) and accessing insecure wireless networks is not illegal, and you simply aren't cracking wireless security protocols. I also highly doubt that any one has access logs on their APs. I'd say that your innocent connections to available wireless networks leave you nothing to worry about.

To get a basic understanding, and get you off your feet you can view youtube tutorials on how to program with C++. This will help you until you start taking courses in the desired programming language. Hacking isn't all programming though. It's about getting information that doesn't belong to you, anonymously
